AN ERGONOMIC STUDY ON USE OF EDUCATIONAL DESKS AND CHAIRS IN PRIMARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOLS


Abstract
An ergonomic study, including measurements of chairs and desks and anthropometric measurements of 302 students in primary, middle, and high schools, were performed to evaluate the educational chairs and desks from April 2 to May 11, 1990.
The results of this study are summarized as follows.
1. The average values of seat height exceeded the average values of popliteal height by 5.7 cm, 6.3 cm, and 3.2 cm in the primary, middle, and high schools, respectively.
2. Percents of students using the chairs complying with the standard of Ministry of Education and Japanese Industrial Standard, the Korean Institute of Manpower Development, and the Chaffin¢¥s were 4%, 21.3% and 1.6%, respectively.
3. Percents of students using the chairs complying with the standard of Ministry of Education were 1.6% in the primary school, 0% in-middle schools, and 4.4% in high schools,¢¥ respectively.
4. On the use of chairs, percents of students using chairs complying with the Korean Standard of Desks and Chairs, KSG-2010, were 096,8.3% and 24.2% in the primary, middle, and high schools, respectively. The overall percent was 10.9% of total measured students.
On the use of desks, percents of students using desks complying with Korean Standard were 0%, 5.0% and 25.8% in the primary, middle and high schools, respectively. The overall value was 10.3% of total measured students.
5. Application of the Korean Standard of Educational Desks and Chairs, KSG-2010, for designing and ? selecting desks and chairs for students taller than 158 cm were not appropriate.
